The Heroes !!

In the three texts that we have read so far, we came across many brave and legendary heroes. For example, there was the brave Arjuna and the very strong Bhima. Also, Hector and Achilles was just as great. In The Tain, Cuchulainn was the ultimate hero. He kills a very strong hound when he was a boy. He fights in a great war to protect his men and the honor of his land. He also ends up sacrificing his son for this reason. He was a very strong man. He has been a hero from the beginning to end. Not only did he live like a hero, but he also died like one. His death was one filled with honor and glory. Taking everything into account, which person from one of the three myths do you think is the best hero? Why is this person your favorite?

  1. I would have to pick Bhima. Not really because he did any more grand things then any of the others, but I liked his personality and his motivations the best. He fought for love and family instead of glory or wealth. He also seemed just a tad less arrogant then the normal mythological hero is.

  2. I would have to pick between Hector or Cu Chulainn. Both of Their fates involved death in battle defending their homes and that's what attracts me most to these two heroes. To pick one between these two I would have to choose Cu Chulainn. He has respect for his enemies as shown by the way he greets them when they come to speak with him at the ford. however he also has a short temper and never lets anyone get feel like they have the upper hand on him. I like that "demanding respect" style to his character and when it comes to Hectors and Cu Chulainn's Death Cu Chulainn dies the most heroic way in my opinion.

  3. From the three texts I have my favorite, so to pick just one whould be hard. From the Hindu unit it would be Karna, from the Iliad it would be Hector and from The Tain, I guess it would be Fergus.

If have to pick one I guess it would be Karna. I think mainly because his story and life seems to reflect lives even today and that even from back then we can learn how to overcome obstacles if we are truly willing to work hard.

I work full time and am going to school full time, as well as starting my own business. None of it has been easy, but by sheer determination, love of family, and lots of hard work (kind of like Karna), I am accomplishing my goal of completing school and working on my business.

  4. Great question...they all had great heroes and in picking one it comes down to Achilles and Bhima but Bhima edges him out. Bhima did what needed to be done to help his people but how he went about it violated his dharma. I like the idea of the anti-hero which Bhima was. He swore to avenge his wife and cruelly did so, he sacrificed his son, and when it came to duel he smashed that thigh to win. Defending his people, avenging his wife, and winning the duel all needed to happen but who but him was willing to do what was need to accomplish those feats. A hero that is willing to sometimes be villain-like to do what is necessary is my type of character and that’s why I choose Bhima.
